Psychoanalysis & Subliminal advertising
Here are some examples I've found which are pretty interesting and definitely eye-opening. Some are more blatant than otheres, for example the Lucky Strike cigarette ads from the 40s and 50s when there was a boom for cigarette sales to women, mainly because of Edward Bernays making cigarettes socially acceptable for women. There are others which are subtle and more subjective such as the Silk Cut stuff by Saatchi & Saatchi with Paul Arden often the creative director. Some of them also touch upon the rise of consumerism, especially in America.
